Dried Mealworms

Dried mealworms are eagerly consumed by a diverse range of wild birds, especially those that feed on insects, and they are particularly adored by Robins! They serve as an exceptionally high-protein food source, which is vital for birds, particularly during the moult season in late summer that can extend for up to five weeks.

Mealworms represent the larval stage of the mealworm beetle (Tenebrio molitor), a member of the Darkling Beetle family. While live mealworms can be quite costly and require prompt feeding after purchase, dried mealworms offer a more economical and hygienic alternative, ensuring minimal loss of nutritional value for your wild birds.

To enhance their appeal, dried mealworms can be rehydrated before feeding by soaking them in warm water, providing birds with additional moisture. This is especially beneficial during spring, as the added moisture facilitates easier consumption for young birds. When natural insect supplies dwindle, particularly in winter, insect-loving birds will seek out gardens as a reliable alternative food source.
